Torpedo Bats: Are They Legal?
The opening weekend of the 2025 MLB season was taken over by a surprise star -- torpedo bats. The bowling pin-shaped bats became the talk of the sport after the Yankees' home run onslaught on the first Saturday of the season put them in the spotlight, and the buzz hasn't slowed since. Fans and players alike are captivated by the unique design and its potential impact on the game. As discussions around their legality in the league heat up, many are questioning whether these unconventional bats could change the dynamics of hitting in baseball. Will torpedo bats become a staple in MLB, or will they face scrutiny and regulations? Only time will tell, but for now, they’re the center of attention.will they face scrutiny and regulations? Only time will tell, but for now, they’re the center of attention.
What is a torpedo bat and why is it different from a traditional MLB bat?
A torpedo bat is designed by altering the distribution of wood compared to traditional MLB bats. While a standard bat typically tapers towards an end cap that is as thick as the sweet spot of the barrel, a torpedo bat features a unique geometric shape. It retains the same size format—such as 34 inches and 32 ounces—but shifts the mass down the bat by about 6 to 7 inches, creating a bowling-pin shape. This design places the fattest part of the bat where hitters make contact most frequently, resulting in a thinner end. This innovative approach aims to enhance performance, sparking conversations about its legality and potential impact on the game of baseball.
How Does it Help?
The benefits of the torpedo bat for those who prefer using it—though not every player is a fan—are two-fold, both grounded in logic and physics. The first advantage comes from its mass distribution; by placing more weight in the area where contact is made most frequently, it aligns better with players' swing patterns, resulting in a more powerful impact when the bat strikes the ball. Players are always on the lookout for ways to connect solidly, and while swings that hit closer to the end of the bat or toward the handle may not perform as well compared to traditional bats, many are willing to accept that trade-off for the extra slugging potential. After all, in baseball, slugging is key to success and can significantly influence a player's performance and value. The second benefit of the torpedo bat is increased bat speed. Think of a sledgehammer and a broomstick, both weighing 32 ounces. The sledgehammer has its weight concentrated at the end, while the broomstick distributes it evenly. The broomstick is much easier to swing quickly. By moving some weight from the end of the torpedo bat to the middle, hitters find it swings like a traditional bat but with slightly faster velocity. This could give players an advantage at the plate.
How is this legal?
Major League Baseball's bat regulations are notably flexible, fostering a culture of innovation. Currently, the rules permit a maximum barrel diameter of 2.61 inches and a length of up to 42 inches, while requiring a smooth and round shape. This lack of stringent restrictions empowers authorized bat manufacturers to explore and experiment with bat designs creatively. As a result, groundbreaking innovations like the torpedo bat can thrive within the framework of these guidelines. This openness to creative engineering not only allows for a diverse range of bat styles but could also significantly alter the dynamics of the game itself, inviting players and fans alike to embrace the evolution of baseball.

A little rain is in the forecast this week—and we’re ready for it. The weather’s been great lately, perfect for pulling hotwire, building new turnouts, and doing some spring cleaning by clearing out old bales from the pens.
We’ve also started calving our April-borns, and we’re really excited about what’s hitting the ground.
Fingers crossed this weekend’s cool snap doesn’t stick around too long—bring back the sunshine and 75°!
