Oklahoma, the current hotbed for MLB prospects…
The 2025 MLB Draft has spotlighted two of the most intriguing high school prospects in the country, and they both reside in Oklahoma: Ethan Holliday and Eli Willits, each with deeply rooted baseball pedigrees and unique developmental journeys.
#1 Overall - Eli Willits (Fort Cobb-Broxton HS), the son of former big leaguer and coach Reggie Willits, brings a different dynamic. Known for his speed, defensive versatility, and high-contact approach, Willits impressed scouts with his athleticism and makeup. Though not quite as hyped as Holliday, his strong senior season and competitive edge have moved him into early-round consideration, with some projecting him as a high-upside developmental pick.
Both players reflect the modern trend of baseball legacy talents making their mark with a mix of elite training, exposure, and performance, each carving a distinct path toward pro ball in 2025.
The Willits family resides in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, where they operate the Double Seven Ranch, managed by Reggie Willits' wife, Amber. Depending on the source, Fort Cobb's population ranges between 400 and 600 residents. In a recent interview with Eli Willits, less than a month before he is expected to become a top pick in the MLB draft, he mentioned that he had just helped move 200 bales of hay the day before the conversation.
This strong work ethic hasn't gone unnoticed by scouts or even by Matt Holliday, who remarked, "I admire the hard work that the farm takes. I appreciate their family's work ethic and what it takes to operate a real farm."
Eli’s schedule is packed with training sessions, baseball games, practices, and responsibilities at the ranch. This year, he has grown an inch, now standing at 6-foot-1, and he has put on 8 pounds of muscle since I saw him play in April. To accelerate his education, he took on a challenging course load to finish high school in just three years, allowing him to reclassify for the 2025 draft. Notably, Eli won’t turn 18 until December, making him the youngest prospect anticipated to be drafted this year—a significant historical factor when considering the success of high school draftees.
#4 Overall - Ethan Holliday (Stillwater HS), the son of former All-Star Matt Holliday and the younger brother of Orioles shortstop Jackson Holliday, entered the draft as one of the top overall prospects. A left-handed hitter with elite bat speed and advanced plate discipline, Ethan combines physical tools with high-level baseball instincts developed under the guidance of his family. He’s played in top showcases and displayed steady improvement throughout his high school career, cementing himself as a potential top-5 pick.
The Hollidays are the established first family of Oklahoma baseball, significantly raising the profile of a state that hasn't historically been known as a hotbed for draft prospects. Matt Holliday, a former All-Star, had an impressive MLB career, batting .299 with 316 home runs over 15 seasons. His legacy continues through his family; his brother Josh is the head coach at Oklahoma State University, following in the footsteps of their father, Tom, who coached the Cowboys for an impressive 26 years. Adding to the family legacy, Ethan's brother, Jackson Holliday, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 draft and currently plays second base for the Baltimore Orioles. This lineage underscores the Holliday family's deep-rooted connection to baseball in Oklahoma.
